⸸ commander ░ nova ⸸ :~$ 🏳️‍⚧️I've moved instances so many times since 2017 that, at this point, I always forget the pinned post. I started out on <a href="http://mastodon.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">mastodon.social</a>, then I hosted a GNU Social instance, then I hosted a Mastodon instance, then I moved through like six other instances, then I stayed put for a while, and then last year I hosted an instance for most of 2024, and now I'm on a combination of labyrinth and wafrn. It's been a ride. But, who I am: I've been into web development since 1999. I am what the kids would call, ancient. I was born when Back to the Future came out in theaters, and I've been all over the place. In my late 20s I started a transition in order to better realize my gender (maybe you remember me as Meryl), but things got complicated, and not so great. Needless to say, I'm just in the closet about all that offline, and I try to keep my online presence mostly representing who I truly am (this is why I don't really post selfies anymore unless I'm posting to pixelfed, which I hardly also do). In less bummer topics, I'm a writer, I make music (although I haven't had any drive to do so in the past six months), and I started learning Python. But my brain is full of holes, so it'll take another 5 years before I've got it down to the point I can do it blindfolded. I am currently (and always) seeking a career in web development or network administration (or some-such field), that is preferably remote, and nicely paid. SiinIt feels like time to reintroduce myself and my practice, since things are always evolving (as they should). If you're new here: hello, my name is Siin. I am a ritual tattooist operating in the Mojave desert in California, near Joshua Tree. I am also co-owner of Rancho de la Libertad (<a href="https://climatejustice.social/@rancholibertad" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@rancholibertad</a>) a pioneering sanctuary and regenerative space. Ritual tattooing has become popular in recent years, with many practitioners attempting to emulate closed practices while simultaneously feigning respect for the lines they're walking on. I am searching for language that helps me distance myself from these practitioners, but have yet to find any that works while encompassing what I do. While I can't summarize this succinctly yet, I can say that while what I offer is also ritual tattooing, I perform rituals in a way that is place-based and draws on my ancestral ties to Sicilian folk magick and witchcraft. I am working into my practice plant medicine and herbal magick sourced and crafted here in the Mojave and utilizing other foraged organic materials such as bones, feathers, and handmade local beeswax candles. We time ritual with moon cycles and seasonal events specific to this landbase. I also offer less participatory tattoo rites that look a lot more like a typical tattoo experience with intention behind it, for those who are not yet ready for significant rites. We decide what your experience should look like when we choose to work together, as there are many shades. I am also a performance & multidisciplinary artist - I paint, illustrate, write, sculpt, and engage with creation how and when I am called to. I believe art should fundamentally challenge us and create an experience of insight, awareness, and inspiration. In my personal life (as though that's a distinct thing) I raise three tiny humans, work with the land, read a lot of books, contemplate things, and build community. I am both apolitical and radically activist, depending on how you define those things. I am interested in changemaking in all its forms, and healing ourselves, the land, and others. At least they taught me to read and somewhat speak English! Always liked being able to customize games and experiences, from age 10 I started by replacing sprites in GBA games and modifying Gamemaker games. This turned into an affinity for tech and programming, as I saw it as sort of our world's version of magic (Write a spell and your magic box will do it kinda thing) Throughout highschool I got to learn how to work different workshop tools for carpentry, as well as more coding-related stuff like coding in C for arduinos and building simple mobile apps for our "science-fair". Towards the end of highschool, the oculus dk1 was announced, and I got stupidly hyped about the idea of VR. So much so in fact that I ended up building my own google cardboard before google cardboard! It was terrible and laggy, but a phone, some wood and a wiimote/airmouse was enough to fool VR demos into working! Thus began a mixed hobby-career of art and tech. I was drawing a lot in class, and by the time I started uni I had a drawing tablet and some decent enough skills to see all that I could learn. When I got hooked into VR, that energy went into 3D modelling: I saw that JanusVR (cool 3d web browser prototype!) supported custom playermodels and a week flew by me just learning to stitch together pieces of models downloaded from the internet. I had my first furry 3d avatar, and it was gloriously crunchy, but it was mine. During uni I studied what you would expect a CS major to learn, and got into making little ESP projects + a bunch of scripting for setting up machines to be servers because docker + winXP is a no go lol. I enjoyed my time there, but it always felt like I was being shoved into Web Development. And that's exactly what I've worked as for 4 years, a fullstack web dev. It's been a wild ride, but I still continued to enjoy my artistic hobbies, and ended up even making commissions for VRChat avatars! I keep remaking my own 3D model like a fursuiter keeps improving their main suit (or making more), so I'm always changing a little bit. Very happy with my current iteration. I have a nice long story about trying to flee my country and working in Japan, but that would make this post way longer than it already is, so just know that I've had to look for a job back home again for 6 months, and at the time of writing finally got it! Excited for the future! I like seeing old webcore designs for themes, apps, sites or even just frontends for modern stuff, so please do share your custom MSN-lookalike discord clients and your win98-looking linux installs! It's a breath of fresh air in the sea of bland corporate designs.
